A recent article on Breast Cancer among L.I. women gives the
probability a woman with breast cancer lives near a chemical
plant and the probability a woman without breast cancer lives
near such a plant. It also states that this translates to a 62%
higher risk of cancer for women living near a plant. The number
of breast cancer victims is given as 107-112 per 100,000. To
simplify the situation say 110 women per 100,000 (= .0011) Long
Island woman get breast cancer. What are the actual numbers that
the 62% applies to? i.e. If a woman lives near a chemical plant
what are her chance of getting breast cancer? ( I get .001678)
If a woman does not live near a chemical plant what are her
   chances? ( .00104) .
