Tom Lehrer is a mathematician who
wrote and sang satirical songs in the 60's. Here is a link to Tom Lehrer singing songs
about calculus
The official text for the course is
Essential Calculus by James Stewart, Second Edition
Each problem set is in two parts. First
there are the sets listed below. These problems will
not be graded. You should definitely do the first few problems and those
marked by an asterisk (*). Some of the problems on the quizzes will be modeled
on these problems.
The second part is a list of problems that will be administered on by an online
homework program called Lumen.
These problems will be computer graded and count towards 10% of your
final grade.
To obtain a Lumen account (which cost $25):
· Login: Link
to Lumen Learning
· Course ID: 45690
· Enrollment
Key: hunter 6543
You should complete the online homework sets before each of the quizzes
that will test those topics.
The last Lumen sets are due the day after the
final. Your Lumen
account will expire at the end of the term, but I will submit the final grades
a few days after the final.
DO NOT ASK FOR AN EXTENSION. You must do the homework problems before
they are examined. This should be obvious. If you have not done the homework
before it is due you are not using the homework effectively.
Be careful how you enter your answers online. The expression 2/3x^3/4
means 2 divided by 3 times x raised to the 3rd power. Everything is then
divided by 4. If you wish to enter 2/3 times x raised to the 3/4 power
you have to write (2/3) x^(3/4). Approximately
90 percent of the time when Lumen does not accept your correct answer the
problem is due to incorrect use of parenthesis.
THERE WILL BE QUIZZES AFTER EACH SECTION. I WILL ANNOUNCE THE EXACT DATE A WEEK BEFORE THE QUIZ.
Homework for
Math 150
(These are in
addition to the Lumen problems.
They are for your edification and will not count towards your grade.)
